The U. S. Food and Drug Administration announced Friday that it has cleared a major drug safety alert for Viagra, the first FDA-approved prescription medicine to treat erectile dysfunction.
Viagra, the brand name for sildenafil, is an oral drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, which is the inability to achieve and maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance.
The agency’s alert, which also covers drugs that have been approved by the FDA for treating hypertension and certain diabetes drugs, will continue to be available through the agency’s website.
“Viagra is a significant advance over the past four years in the treatment of erectile dysfunction,” said Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
“This important safety announcement is a major step forward in our efforts to develop new treatments for erectile dysfunction,” Woodcock added.
Viagra is currently the only FDA-approved treatment for erectile dysfunction.
According to Woodcock, Viagra is now available by prescription only.
“This move reflects the significant progress we’ve made in the treatment of erectile dysfunction since 1998,” Woodcock said.
Viagra is a prescription medication approved by the FDA to treat erectile dysfunction.
Originally developed as a heart medication to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, Viagra has been used to treat erectile dysfunction since 1998, Woodcock added.
“This regulatory move marks a significant milestone in our efforts to develop new treatments for erectile dysfunction,” Woodcock said.
Viagra’s approval represents a major step forward in the ongoing development of sildenafil, the brand name for the active ingredient in Viagra. It was approved by the FDA in 1998.
The drug’s primary uses include the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men and pulmonary arterial hypertension in patients.
Viagra, which has been available since 1998, was approved by the FDA in the United States and is marketed as a generic version of sildenafil.
Originally developed to treat erectile dysfunction, Viagra is now available by prescription only.

In addition to the FDA warning, the agency announced that it has also received several letters of warning from manufacturers of generic Viagra products.
For example, in June 2005, the manufacturer of sildenafil, Pfizer, Inc. voluntarily withdrew the product from the market, and Pfizer, the company that manufactures sildenafil, voluntarily discontinued the product. Pfizer is still working on the product and has not received a notification from the manufacturer of sildenafil.
The company has been able to launch its own generic versions of Viagra in Europe and the United States.
In addition to the FDA warning, Pfizer is also working with manufacturers of other generic Viagra products to develop other products that are more cost-effective, such as those marketed as sildenafil.
The FDA’s warning, which was added by the agency on June 25, 2005, will go into effect in January 2009.
Originally developed as a heart medication to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, Viagra has been used to treat erectile dysfunction since 1998.
The agency’s warning about sildenafil, the brand name for sildenafil, follows the FDA’s announcement about the drug’s approval.
